URL-shortening
URL shortening is using a host like bit.ly to make your links shorter. Very usefull for Twitter as it saves charatchers you would ohterwise waste.
But something got me thinking. Do they own the links now? what would happen if Bit.ly stopped working?
It's fully possible that bit.ly or similar services would stop working as quite a few of them have a poor buisniss model and can go defucnt fast if somthing would happen to them fincially. If that where to happen the links provided by the service would be submitted to link rot, they would just stop working at all. But some sites allow you to down load your links and directories
They do not own your links but, as in bit.ly's instance the LY=Lybias coutry url code. That means that link is either genarated there or someone is routing traffic throug there. There is low sequrity on these places so if some criminal started hijacking links they could do a lot of damge to you, espscially if you are goverment employed or are famous. But this is more likely to happen if you use dropbox or similar.
To conclude Bit.ly is realtivly safe so don't stop using it. But then again the net is never a 100% safe no matter what you are doing online so take care!
Thank you
Tommy
